Intracranial Tumors in Children


Abstract
A clinical study on thirty-two cases of brain tumors admitted to the Department of Pediatrics and Neurosurgery of Seoul National University Hospital from Jan. 1977 till Dec. 1981 was performed.
1. The sex ratio of male and female was 1.9: 1. The age distribution was relatively even, but in the age group 1015, there are 14 cases (43.8%)
2. Supratentorial tumors are 14 cases (43.8%) and infratentorial, 18 cases (56.2%).
3. Histological distribution showed that the most common tumor was 12 cases (37.5%) of medulloblastoma, the next, 5 cases (15.6%) of craniopharyngioma, 4 cases (12.3%) of primitive glioma, 3 cases (9.4%) of astrocytoma & ependymoma, respectively, 2 cases (6.2%) of germinoma and i case (3. 1%) of oligodendroglioma, choroid plexus papilloma, meningioma, respectively.
4. Visual disturbance was the most common sign (71.4%) in supratentorial tumors and headache, vomiting and papilledema followed. In infratentorial tumors, vomiting (88.9%) was the most common and headache, gait disturbance, visual disturbance, ataxia occurred less commonly in order of frequency.
5. Simple skull X-ray revealed abnormal finding in 78.6% of supratentorial tumors and 66.7% of infratentorial tumors.
6. CT scan was performed in 25 cases and 100% of these cases showed diagnostic abnormality.
7. In 22 cases, follow-up was possible. Among them 7 cases expired within 1 year. Survival over 1 year was 11 cases and over 2 year, 4 cases.
